If this isn't allowed go ahead and delete it, I understand, but if there's anyone out there who knows statistics, has a sympathetic heart, and doesn't plan on sleeping, (it being midnight and all).. please let me know, catch me on msn= katiechillas@yahoo.com or comment on here, I'll be up for awhile. I have a test due in the morning, I have been going through tests, the book, etc. and i can't quite work out some problems on Type I and Type II errors as well as confidence intervals. Have mercy on a right-brained college kid if you will! thanks |

Seeking Reference Material
Hi everyone, I am seeking any reference material that eventually explains Hopf algebras. Really, I'd take anything that does a good job at explaining related topics starting with the definition of a module. I need something designed for a non-specialist. Thanks in advance. |

If That Tree Is A Schnauzer, Then Its Leaves Are Automatics
Ahhhh at last the weather warms more oft than not and the sun blears and the air thickens and gloms on to me and metaphoric ants squirm in one's metaphoric pants to frisk and frolic in the outside and flop and banter about in the greenery. Yardwork and gardening beckon. As does some aggressive Indian-mynah-eradication plan. Must remember to track down this fellow in Sydney who's run a few eradication programs with local councils and sells his traps on the side. Kill kill kill, thrill thrill thrill; as the record sang which The Groovy Guru once played on Get Smart therewith foreby to subliminally disrupt Youth Society and collapse civilisation so KAOS could cash in. But dead Mynahs? That would help Australian civilisation. Well, its ecosphere. Which Aussie civilisation hasn't been much help to for a lot. As my sludgy hibernatory instincts fade I've been getting back to the gym a bit too - which simply has to stop. Maybe not utterly - but I need to finish my music project. One or two more songs & I think I'll have a batch enough to start spreading The Word and all that. Swallow my pride a& fear of failure & just treat it like a video game. Play play play. Toss it out and see what happens, jiggle the pieces like rounds in a simulation. Which really, it's all it is anyway. Anyway, back to looking out my window at the pretty pretty world. |

Hunter, JHD
It's only 2 pm, but since I got up at 5:15 am, I feel like I've had a full day! I took Hunter and Jubilee to an AHBA herding trial this weekend. We entered in the JHD (Junior Herding Dog) class both days. It is basic herding ability + control test--your dog has to work with you to move the sheep around some obstacles and has to stop at the end. It takes a bit of skill and instinct from the dog, a responsive dog, and a handler with a wee dram of know-how. Not hard--but not just a free pass either. On Saturday, Jubilee gave me the middle paw pad and tried to take down a sheep. She didn't call off and let go until I went and convinced her. (And the judge leaned over and yelled at her too.) She failed. Oops! But Hunter passed. She was a bit more stressed than I'd like, but the guy in the test before us kept yelling at his dog "LIE DOWN! LIE DOWN! I SAID LIE DOWN!!!" And her ears kept twitching and falling with each yell until she was Ms. Sadface with her ears at half mast and off to the side. Hunter is a delicate flower!!! Today, however, I got up earlier and arrived at the field in time to go to an empty area and play ball with Jubilee for about 20 minutes. I asked her for downs to throw the ball, downs to get the ball, downs while I walked around, etc. In general, playing with her, but also reinforcing obedience. To some degree, this worked. She was pretty good in the herding--until the very last bit where I ask her to lie down so I could open the gate and let my sheep out. Then she couldn't bear it any longer and tried to split a sheep off and chase it. But this time, I yelled at her and she quit and the sheep came back to me and I opened the gate and all 3 sheep were QUITE pleased at the prospect of getting away from this predator. And then I asked her to lie down and she did and I called her to me, and she came, and it was good and we passed. WHEW. Hunter also did better today. I made sure that she wasn't following the yelling guy and I told her she was good and walked in happy and with a happier dog. And she did some nice things--picked up the stock smoothly and gently and at a nice trotting pace and when the stock did split, she chased the single but moved to his outside when I asked and pushed him back to the other sheep and she didn't bite--she did open her mouth and think about it though! She wasn't as "on" as I want her to be, but much improved and she also passed today! So, she is Blackthorn's Hunter, JHD. Yay! |

I have a question regarding Quick Time. Kindof. So I have a video file that is in .avi format, and whenever I try to play it with Quick Time it has no sound. I also tried opening it with DivX and it says this: You may need an additional audio decoder to play the soundtrack of this file. This file contains a track in the Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192") format. You may need to install a DirectShow decoder for this audio format in order to hear the soundtrack of this file.
I have tried looking online for decoders, but all of the ones I can find are for windows.
Any help would be appreciated. |

Manifolds question-zilla!
All right, so normally I wouldn't be posting like three questions at the same time, but I had swine flu this week (make sure you get the vaccine if you haven't already, because I promise you don't want the swine flu, it sucks) and couldn't go to class or meet with people. So with no further ado: 1) We're supposed to show that a simple Lie group is linear. In the hint sheet the professor gave us, he says, let C_g be the map that is conjugation by g, and let Ad(g) = T_1 C_g, the differential of this map. (I think this is called the adjoint representation or something.) I have no idea where this hint is going, and I don't see anything extra special about simple Lie groups that helps us buy this result, except perhaps that they are connected (because the identity component of a Lie group is a normal subgroup). 2) Next thing I'd like to show is that the differential of the inversion map (call it inv) is negative the identity. The hint sheet says to use the fact that exp is a homomorphism from lines through the origin in the Lie algebra to the Lie group. Certainly it's the case that exp(-v) = inv(exp(v)), and I think this is probably what we want, but I don't know how to get T_1 inv in there. 3) Last one for now I promise. Why would the differential of the determinant be trace? Thanks for your help. I'm going to go hang my head in manifolds-induced shame now. |

Not a real problem:
Okay, so my math methods teacher gave us this problem as a joke - There's some sort of trick to it (think of the problem that starts out with a=b and eventually reaches 2=1), and I haven't figured it out yet. Here goes: Let a3 = 2a + 1 and a2 + ab + c = 0. Find the "b" and "c."Because it's a trick, I'm not sure if there's any "math" to solve the equation. What's the deal? |

math gre
I'm re-taking the Math GRE tomorrow morning (ugh), and I want to take a couple peppermints. Does anyone know if small things such as this are permitted? I can't seem to find an answer to this specific question... Edit: Well, I definitely did better this time, that much is for sure. I still don't really understand why graduate schools care if I can do 3 hours worth of hero-level integration, though.... |

The new new thing
So, it's going to be one a day, is it? I hope so, because even with today instant communication, it's hard to coordinate the lag time between attack, first response and media - so trying to have one for morning and evening drive time would mean early AM spress, and finding a crowd then is difficult. After the third 24 Hour Diner Massacre, I think people would catch on. |

Parapsychological Activity
So I saw Paranormal Activity. On one level it's a minimalist cult film scam which skates by on a few effective scenes and a lot of filler which becomes increasingly implausible when you think about it. On another, it comes close to embracing the Dogme manifesto and manages to as much about male/female/nature/psychology dynamics than Lars Von Triers current shock-fest, and perhaps in a more coherent fashion. I was helped along in this reading by a brilliant review by kdotdammit - honestly, she's one of the best out there. ( In horror we find what we bring. ) |

I AM big. It's the businessmen that got small.
People sometimes ask me, “Leonard, if you’re so smart, why don’t you run your own business?” Except they leave out the part about me being smart. My answer is multifaceted. 1. I do run my own business; I am a freelance writer. Just because I don’t have any employees doesn’t mean it’s not a business; just ask the IRS. Er, actually, on second thought, please don’t ask the IRS, or even mention my name around them. 2. It’s not that I don’t have any ideas about running my own business; it’s just that they’re all stupid. I tend to judge ideas I come up with for new products not by how well they would sell, but by whether or not they are hilarious. 3. My own personal prejudices interfere with most of the skills one needs to run a business. I am bad with money, I don’t like telling people what to do, and I get along poorly with others, all of which are essential skills for running a business; more specifically, my occasional urges to open up a bistro are stymied by my logistical deficiencies, and I always think it would be fun to run a bar, but the older I get, the less I relish the idea of staying up until 4AM every day. 4. Most of the businesses I would be interested in starting are guaranteed money-losers (starting a magazine, opening an independent bookstore, running a small press) or so abstract they would be unlikely to attract customers. 5. Being my own boss would mean working more, not less. All that said, if you have a good idea for a small business, and are interested in 'partnering' with me, please PayPal a large sum of money to leonard dot pierce at gmail dot com, and I promise to spend some time at a tropical resort hotel thinking about your idea. |
